Follicum has built up a qualified scientific advisory group that has experience and knowledge from the diabetes area. Their purpose is to offer strategic advice on the company’s research, maximizing the development potential.

Dr Åke Lernmark

Dr Åke Lernmark is senior professor and expert in the Department of Clinical Sciences at Lund University in Malmö and consultant in the Skåne Region. His research is focused on the mechanisms by which autoimmune diabetes (type 1) develops. He obtained his medical doctorate at the Umeå University and has pursued his research as the head of the Hagedorn Research Laboratory in Gentofte, Denmark, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, Karolinska Institute and at Lund University. His research is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the Helmsley Foundation. The research in studies such as TEDDY, TrialNet and TEFA among others aim at better develop approaches to predict and prevent autoimmune diabetes in children.

Dr Erik Renström

Dr Erik Renström is a physician and professor in experimental endokrinology at the Department of Clinical Sciences Malmö, Lund University. His research focuses on the pancreatic Islets of Langerhans and their roles in type 2 diabetes. Renström studied Medicine at the University of Gothenburg and defended his PhD thesis there in 1997. Thereafter he moved to Lund University and established his line of research that deals with how insulin production is affected by environmental factors associated with type 2 diabetes, but also how genetic variations affect insulin secretion and thereby increase the risk of disease. Erik Renström has contributed with several scientific breakthroughs to his field and his research is supported by grants from the EU, Knut och Alice Wallenbergs foundation och the Swedish Research Council. He is also elected Dean for the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University during 2018-2020.
